Mate Argentino (Bebida - Beverage)

Do you know what “Argentine Mate”  is ?

Mate is the traditional argentine drink. This infusion is served in a small calabash gourd ((Lagenaria siceraria) filled with crushed dried leaves of the yerba mate plant (ilex paraguariensis,) where hot water is poured.   To enjoy the beverage, you sip the infusion through a metal straw (bombilla) with small holes or slots that allow the brewed liquid in but block the chunky matter that makes up much of the mixture. There’s a cold water version in my region called “Tereré”. Iced orange juice (or iced water with mint leaves) is used instead of hot water, becoming a very refreshing drink to “survive” the nearly 50º C in summer (122º F) !!!

Para los hispano-hablantes de otros países: ¿Conocen el “mate argentino” ?

El mate es la infusión tradicional de la Argentina. La misma se sirve en un porongo o calabaza de peregrino ((Lagenaria siceraria),  llena con hojas finamente molidas de la planta de yerba mate (ilex paraguariensis,) donde se agrega agua calienta la cual es bebida de a sorbos a través de una bombilla metálica con orificios o ranuras que permiten el ingreso del líquido, colando el excedente del té. En mi región, existe una versión fría llamada “Tereré”, la cual consiste en usar jugo de naranja, o agua helada con hojas de menta, en lugar de agua caliente. Esto lo convierte en una bebida muy refrescante  para “soportar” los casi 50º C (112 Fº) de calor en verano !!

Intérpretes de la Bienal de Escultura

En un momento de descanso, durante el intenso trabajo de interpretación en la Bienal Internacional de Escultura del Chaco, los intérpretes de Inglés, Español. Ruso y Japonés disfrutamos de un delicioso y merecido mate (en mis manos) con mi hija.

In a moment of rest during the hectic interpretation job at the International Biennial of Sculpture in Chaco, the Spanish/English/Russian and Japanesse interpreters enjoyed a delicious and deserved "mate" (typical argentine drink which is in my hand) with my daughter.
